The construction of the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma began in 1229 and was completed in 1601. The rose window on the east side of the cathedral is one of the world's largest. It measures 12 meters (40 feet) across and was constructed with 1,236 pieces of stained glass. When sun shines through the rose window on a bright morning, the Cathedral walls lights up like a rainbow. The Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma is also known as "The Cathedral of Light".
This is called a Neulas. Local artist make these paper ornaments for the holidays and they decorate the churches with them.
